El Médano

A fishing village in the south of Tenerife, picturesque and original. El Médano literally means "wind waves in the sand". The mentioned elements wind and sand are to be found everywhere here and the village is largely free of mass tourism.

Despite the proximity of the airport of approx. 10 minutes drive and the resulting aircraft noise, you will also find relaxing peace in El Médano. The place has a very special charm with its stylish shops, atmospheric cafes and restaurants. Also for non-water sports lovers an excursion or a relaxing holiday is worthwhile - you will find three hotels and plenty of apartments.

Wide sandy beaches, good wind conditions and a relaxed atmosphere, this is El Médano. A real hotspot for wind and kite surfers. On the promenade there are many surf schools offering lessons and hiring out the appropriate equipment.

The wind blows all year round and the average wind probability is about 60 percent. July and August are usually the best months for windsurfing and kitesurfing, as the well-known north-east trade wind blows the strongest during these months, mostly side-onshore.

Just lying on the beach or sitting in a café is of course also an alternative - we recommend the favourite spot for surfers, the "Flashpoint" - a café with excellent cuisine and good value for money. What makes the café an experience is that you sit just a few steps away from the beach, having a café or beer and either watch the people strolling along or the active wind and kite surfers. A relaxed atmosphere - because nobody bothers whether you show up in a bikini or business suite. Sometimes even, you might meet some famous world class surfers here.

Other activities in El Médano

As already mentioned, El Médano is first and foremost a place for windsurfing and kitesurfing. But due to the wide beaches and few hotel complexes, the surroundings are suitable for relaxing or having a swim.

About 20 minutes walk away is the Playa de La Tejita. A beautiful natural beach and the longest of its kind in Tenerife. It is relatively easy to find, the beach is located at the foot of the Montaña Roja, the pyramid-shaped mountain directly by the sea. This mountain basically separates El Médano from the Playa de la Tejita. One of the most wonderful bathing beaches of the island, but only if the wind blows a little less strong.

Both beaches, El Médano and Playa de la Tejita, are suitable for long walks. If you walk from the centre of El Médano along the coast to the view point of Montaña Bocinegro, which is located close to the base of Montaña Roja, you will be rewarded with a very impressive view.

Alternatively, you can do Stand-up-Paddling on windless days, or classic surfing and bodyboarding on nice waves.

You didn't bring any equipment? Our shop hires SUP (Stand Up Paddles), surfboards and bodyboards by the hour and offers kitesurfing lessons.

We look forward to meeting you!

Tenerife

Tenerife is one of the most popular holiday and water sports destinations in Europe. In only 4-5 hours by plane you can reach the southern airport of the island, for example from England. With a length of 83 kilometres and a width of 54 kilometres it is the largest of all 7 Canary Islands. In total, about 918,000 people of different cultures live here. In the south of the island it is warm all year round, while in the north you may need an umbrella at times, but in return it is beautifully green - a paradise for hikers.

If you are attracted to beaches, the south of Tenerife is the place to be. Good wind conditions and a pleasantly warm climate ensure fun in and outside the water all year round. One of the best known and most trendy beaches of Tenerife is located about 5 kilometres from the south airport, in the fishing village of El Médano. This is the hotspot for surfers, especially for kiters, because the wind turns up quite strong here.

The Canary Islands are also the only water sports area in Europe where you can surf and kite all year round. With approximately 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, these islands offer a unique climate. There is a reason why Tenerife is called "the island of eternal spring".

Tenerife is also a hotspot for an exceptional cuisine. The Mediterranean cuisine is not only fresh but also healthy.

So we welcome you on your next visit, here in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean!!
